Then all of a sudden during Greg's set this old nasty woman got right in Greg's face, waving her finger, and saying "stop! stop!" After an uncomfortable exchange she revealed her authority as the owner of the property and informed us that we were not allowed rock! She was flabbergasted by our insolence (or something like that). Then she patronized Taylor for a while to show that she was really actually nice and not the crazy bat she appeared to be. Later, Taylor said "what's up with landladies becoming old and bitter". He was making a comparison to the time he and I got kicked out of our friends apartment because the landlady was afraid of kids. Taylor and I have planned to never get old and mean. So after we packed all our gear and clear up the mess we tried to salvage the evening by heading over to local rock club who had offered to let us play after their existing show. However since they still wanted to charge all our friends to get in we opted for a nearby house where we played an acoustic set. It was awesome. Friday 3/12/03	Eagle Rock, CA	Occidental College	In the morning Greg Wood and I were hanging out with Royce Gracie in OC. We made it to this lunch show just in time for me to jump in front of my borrowed amp and rock to a decent crowd sitting on the quad lawn. Then we ate a good free veggie lunch and I went to the accupuncturist in an attempt to fix my swollen nose which I wrecked during Muay Tai Kickboxing. After that I recorded some stuff in the studio. Tuesday 2/18/03	Highland Park, CA	Mr. T's Bowl	Mr. T's was one of the first clubs that Ben and I went to while we were starting the band last March. We attended their free indie rock show on Tuesday night several times and saw some of the best bands we'd ever seen. That set the bar for us over the next month, and the resultant feeling of intimidation motivated us to practice like posessed men. It was an honor to come back and play that night for so many musicians we respected. w/

Tuesday 1/21/03	Irvine, CA	UC Irvine the court yard between ART and SCS buildings	This was a last minute show for an art opening that our friend Jo Anna helped set up. We were a bit rusty but quite a few people turned out so we naturally had fun. We debuted a new song which was well received. The food was good and some of the art was good too.
1/11/03	Fountain Valley, CA (Orange County)	House Show 10214 Cardinal Ave.	Our first show after almost 1 month off. We played in Dave's garage and he invited many friends. It was a relief to rock again. Halfway Home was a great band and a great bunch of guys. After we went to dinner at Lani's mom's vegan restaurant. Excellent! Later we played team Halo with a bunch of guys at Dave's house. Wednesday 12/11/02	Anaheim, CA	The Chain Reaction 1652 W. Lincoln	To be honest we expected more people to attend, but a weeknight during finals prevented that. 150 loyal music fans still came out despite the circumstances and we soon realized that it was time to rock. We played a long set and were able to show the Orange County fans a side of our band that we haven't been able to previously. Sunday 12/8/02	La Jolla (San Diego), CA	House Show 7955a prospect place	This was a small show in a beachside apartment with a beautiful view. Our hosts provided some tasty vegan chinese food. Our friend Amber impressed everyone with a few solo acoustic songs. We met her in Flagstaff last time through. Like many of the west coast shows, this one also had an interesting personality. We started with our more intense songs and when we had our fill of that we moved on to the rockers. We ended the set by making everybody dance on the balcony while Chris flicked the light like a strobe. Later that night we took an inspiring walk on the beach by cliffs and caves and incoming front-churned waves. We stopped at Seal Beach to gaze at the large family of Seals as they slept. Saturday 11/30/02	Placerville (Sacto Area), CA	Placerville Town Hall 549 Main Street	Our good friend Dan set up this fire hall show. This performance was on the intense end of the spectrum for some reason. And it's interesting to note that each of our Bay area and Sacto shows had very different and distinct personalities. True Love was laid back and fun, Stanford was upbeat college party fun, Imusicast was honest and comfortable, this show started intense and sad then progressed to fun and upbeat. Who can tell or understand why? The most notable thing about this second run of the west coast is that we are getting very comfortable as a band, and having more fun than before. Our live shows are better reflecting our actual moods. Maybe this is not good for consistancy but it's made it easier to perform every day. Friday 11/29/02	Sacramento, CA	True Love 2406 J Street (at 24th, next to Relles Florist)	This was a very rare acoustic performance at our favorite punk rock cafe. It's run by Kevin and Alison Seconds of the legendary punk band 7 Seconds who also played the show with us. They are really sweet people so naturally the vibe of this cafe is also really special. The show was sold out and since Bright Life had to cancel we played our longest set in months. Ben and Mark opened the show with a couple of solo songs, and after the show they both played more requested material to the remaining folks. Sunday 11/24/02	Seattle, WA	Consolidated Works 500 Boren Avenue North	We arrived a day early in Seattle to spend time with some really special friends. I've read so many times that Seattle is supposed to be dreary and stand-offish, but we have never experienced that. Seattle easily stands at the top of our list of favorite places to play. On Saturday night Kristen and Shannon had a party at their place. Several friends played acoustic songs including CJ and Amy, who we met through Jonah on our last tour. Ben played some old Orange material which was a rare treat, and I got to play an acoustic version of Hopeless. I really hadn't done that since before the band was together and it felt wonderful. I've been in a bit of a slump for a few weeks and I sensed a little ray of hope ironically. The next day we did a photo shoot with Kristen. She is a brilliant pro photographer for the EMP in Seattle and has donated many pictures to our site. We sampled several interesting locations such as the ports, a greenhouse, and a park next to the graves of Bruce and Brandon Lee. Next our friend Dave who we met in El Paso took us to the fish market famous for throwing them. Taylor caught a big slimy one to the delight of the gathered cheering crowd. That night we had one of the better shows in recent memory. All the typical factors were in place, good crowd, good sounds, etc, but we mixed the set up and did some things that we don't normally do. This brought back a little more joy. As a young band we're still learning how to let go. The way guys like Jonah or Andrew WK let it go. Friday 11/22/02	Portland, OR	University of Portland Commons 5000 N. Willamette blvd	Super responsive enthusiastic crowd. One of the better turn-outs of our dates with Bright Life, so I think they had extra fun at this show. Old friends traveled far and we were treated really well. Ever since Taylor joined the tour back in early Oct. he has been on stage for almost every show and often sings with me. This night he and I coordinated some jumps off the speakers and it seems that he has really become part of the show. In fact, he steals the show. And whenever I forget why I'm playing all I have to do it look at him. When he throws the rock sign or dances or sings he totally means it. He's not entertaining. He's just rocking. The free lunch attracted a large number of people who very graciously attended our whole set. Several friends from Sacto drove out to see us which never fails to make our day. Wednesday 11/20/02	Reno, NV	Ark-a'ik 555 e Fourth St	On the ride in we saw the "Salt Flats", which looked like giant fields of snow or ice, but it's actually just super flat tracks of salt. Many land speed records have been set there. Reno itself has a casino strip much like Vegas but it's as if all the people have been abducted. The venue was really cool. The crowd was small but they danced and sang along so it made us smile. A number of people that we met in different cities were there. That was a treat. So it's safe to say that Reno was a good experience because we made some real friends. The only negative part of the night was when Danny's car got broken into. Tuesday 11/19/02	Salt Lake City, UT	Todd's Bar and Grill 1035 South 300 West	Ok..do you remember how earlier in this diary I mentioned that sometimes we're forced to play a bar gig that sucks? Well, this was "that gig". The local band that was supposed to headline bullied their way into the opening spot. When they finished all their friends left and the few people that had come out to see us who were actually old enough to get in had to leave because we were playing so late. So we ended up just jamming on Bright Life's gear to basically ourselves. Saturday 11/16/02	Las Vegas (Henderson), NV	House Show	Our friends Noma and Dava set up this house show. At first we weren't sure what it was going to be like because many of the people in attendance were not familiar with our style of music or bands that are similar. However we were made to feel very welcomed by new friends like Bo who sported one hell of a mullet and canned beer. By the end of the night we had all had tons of fun. Friday 11/15/02	Flagstaff, AZ	Joe's Place 200 E. Route 66	Occasionally our only option in a new town is to play a bar show. It usually sucks to put it mildly. However at Joe's, for some strange reason, we just let it go and had a great time. The crowd enjoyed us enjoying ourselves, and even the dude who yelled "play Skynyrd" was treated to a brief rendition of "Sweet Home Alabama" and a number of other classics. Thursday 11/14/02	Grand Canyon	nature	The Grand Canyon is another work of God and nature that we don't have appropriate words to describe. ("Big", "wicked big", and "humongous" are all good.) We were inspired and stunned. All of us hiked down a bit, but Ben and I continued until we reached the crest of a small mountain further into the canyon. As we walked the images become more real and less like a giant painting. 'This has been here for millions of years and I will be long dead before even the smallest stone disintegrates. Thursday 10/17/02	Albany, NY	SUNY RACC Center 1400 Washington Ave	This was the second day we hung out with Andrew WK and it was our first "arena show". We Love Andrew and his band, a bunch of straight up amazing guys. I don't think I've ever seen as much energy and happiness at a rock show. The day before we saw his show in Syracuse. We were jaw dropped. You just can't understand this incredible swell of positive energy until you see it live. We all learned a lot from watching Andrew perform. It was a privelage. The show we actually played was in an arena that holds almost 4000 people, however only a few hundred were in attendance. To most bands this would have been a let down, but Andrew came out smiling and dragged every willing acomplice on stage for a wild time. At one point he put 10 year old Taylor on his shoulders and rocked out. Taylor's face was pure joy and excitement. Saturday 10/12/02	Marietta (Atlanta), GA	Swayze's 1115 Powder Springs Rd Suite K	Lee invited us back for a second night in a row to open for Treephort. It was a wild show! Crazy and fun! Treephort is a great indie band that is hard to describe. Kyle drank a gallon of coolaid with gummy worms and puked it into a strainer. Then he ate it. Then he also ate a bottle of elmers glue and a box of crayons. Then he layed a big gross kiss on Lee the singer. Then he poured the puke down his pants. Then he stripped down to his bright red leotards and tried to smash a computer monitor with a bat. Then he spent a long time cleaning up after the show. Thursday 9/19/02	Boston, MA	Northeastern University	This was an outside college show set up by our friend Lua. Will Brierly played again. A fairly large crowd gathered and stuck around for the whole show. Friends from Lowell came again. Will did a bunch of amazing card tricks and then they played the new Spiderman movie.
Thursday 9/12/02	Lowell, MA	UMASS Lowell Fox Hall	Our friend Will Brierly set this show up with The Fellowship and Quota. It was nice to see all the friends we made the last time. Namely Joe, Lauren, Aaron, Adam, Jared, and more. These guys have been supporting since before JS was even a band. Will put on a great show as usual and did some amazing card tricks for us afterwards.
Sunday 9/8/02	Albany, NY	Valentine's 17 New Scotland Ave	Once again we were really happy with this show. The energy level was super high. The boys from Clear Motive came out from Buffalo. Many friends and relatives showed up. We are getting the impression that our last tour through the east was worth the effort.

Sunday 9/1/02	Madison, WI	The Annex 1206 Regent St	Super room. A bunch of Aaron's friends from Science camp came out to help make this a really fun show. Dharma Kaya Music is doing a great job supporting underground music with this new indie night show. Ben and I were dragged to a place called Paradise where we met lots of awesome people from Madison.
Saturday 8/31/02	Woodstock, IL	Warped Skate Park	There was a lot of confusion as to where we were supposed to play, but Justin ended up bumping his own band so we could play Warp Skate Park. This guy named Ben sang an OI chorus to the quiet parts of Cherry Wine which added a whole new dimension to this song. We had fun watching the kids skate.

Thursday 8/29/02	Columbus, OH	Bernies Distillery 1896 N. High St.	Colin got local band, The Pits, to open this show last minute. It was great fun. Don, and old regular here, sang Batman with us. Then he jumped on stage to help Ben sing Badge of Honor. A bunch of the friends we made at Wesleyan and on the street showed up. Mark sparred out on the sidewalk with Brad, a kung-fu student. And Julia did a great job filling in for James Dean.
Wednesday 8/28/02	Rockford, IL	The Divine Cup 220 S. Madison St.	All the local bands and Three and a Quarter cancelled and the venue didn't think it wise for us to play by ourselves, so we went to Columbus and our friend Colin made us feel incredibly welcomed. He had us play 2, yes 2, last minute shows on his campus and helped us get local bands for our club show at Bernie's. We also met really nice people at Wesleyan.

Friday 8/23/02	Cincinnati, OH	The Void 4011 Hamilton ave	This was a cool DIY style punk venue. The crowd was much more subdued than we're used to and at first we thought they didn't like us. But then we were told that the Cincy crowd was always like that. So we accepted them for who they were and ended up making friends.

A few doors down there were hundreds of people going to a dance bar to practice their favorite pick-up lines. It was nice to see someone trying to bring in indie music despite the fact that they will not get rich. Some guy heckled us for the first time. Yeah.

There were moments where we played like honest happy pure children and moments of complete total loss of control. An intense experience.

7/21-28/02	West coast	Your house	Heading up the coast was fun. San Fran has an amazing fog that can be touched. Mouse hooked us up there. Then we met up with Katrina and Maureen in Sacto and learned about the beautiful people of True Love. The Redwood forest was like something out of a misty fairytale dream at dusk.

The drum riser got unlocked somehow and when Aaron, Mark, and Ben tried to jump off of it we all fell on our faces. Chris Carabba ate Chinese food with us at the hotel.
